Inhoud

Bone stress injuries (BSI) are relatively common in distance running athletes exposed to large volumes of training. They can be challenging to manage and recurrence of bone stress injurues are unfortunately common. This session will provide an overview of the risk factors associated with bone stress problems, describe ways to analyze distance running mechanics, and recommend approaches to prevent and manage these injuries including the role of running retraining.

  • Perform a systematic video analysis of a distance runner with an emphasis on key metrics related to bone stress injury
  • Identify effective approaches to modify the running form to mitigate bone stress injury risk

Bryan Heiderscheit

Bryan Heiderscheit, PT, PhD, FAPTA is the Frederick Gaenslen Professor in Orthopedics and Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation. He is the Director of the Badger Athletic Performance with UW Athletics; founding Director of the UW Health Runners’ Clinic; and Co-director of the UW Neuromuscular Biomechanics Laboratory. Dr. Heiderscheit’s research is aimed at understanding and enhancing the clinical management of orthopedic conditions, with particular focus on sports-related injuries. Support for his research includes the NIH, NFL, NBA, and GE Healthcare. He is a fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association, and past member of the executive board of the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy. He is a Senior Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy and a member of the NFL Soft Tissue Injury Task Force.
