Working with musicians and dancers is a privilege and a challenge. As clinicians, it is easy to make assumptions about the understanding and body connection that these performing artists might have, but in fact, they find their way around their barriers and blocks to arrive at unsustainable movement solutions just like anyone else. When we zoom out from the area of pain and consider the individual as a whole,  appreciating the interplay between mind, emotions and movement strategies, we can help these extraordinary human beings to find greater ease, efficiency and effectiveness in their performing bodies.

In this PowerTalk, we will explore the JEMSÒ approach to analysis and treatment, in the first half with musicians and the second half with dancers, using case examples to provide context to investigate the key question “Why is this structure under pressure?”.

Using simple principles, we will discover how holding this question in our minds can switch our brains from the convergent thinking that we use to identify the source of the pain for diagnosis, to identifying how the way a person is using themselves is showing up as pain or dysfunction. Only then can we find our way towards a more sustainable, comfortable strategy, which often brings about an improvement in performance as a bonus!

Leerdoelen

By the end of this PowerTalk attendees should:

  • Understand how simple global principles can provide insights which lead to highly individualised, function relevant assessment and treatment.
  • Recognise that the principles discussed are applicable to any patient in the general population.
  • Have a collection of techniques or that they can apply immediately in their own clinical settings.
  • Have a sense of the experiences in their own body.

Docent

Joanne Elphinston

Joanne Elphinston is a movement philosopher, performance consultant and international lecturer in rehabilitation. She began her professional journey in Australia over thirty years ago as a physiotherapist and coach. From her wide ranging work in elite sport and the performing arts, to her continued clinical interest in chronic and complex presentations, Joanne’s path of inquiry lies in what connects us in the deeply human experience of movement.

Joanne is the creator of the JEMS approach, a holistic but meticulously clinically reasoned method for integrating the science and the art of clinical practice. Through two decades of prolific teaching across multiple countries, Joanne’s work is now used by physiotherapists in a wide array of clinical settings, from paediatrics, neurology and falls prevention through to hypermobility and sports performance, and her work has underpinned an array of research projects in Sweden.

Joanne’s books, including “Stability, Sport and Performance Movement”, have been translated into a number of languages. Her most recent book, “The Power and the Grace: A Professional’s Guide to Ease and Efficiency in Functional Movement”, is also highly recommended. More information on Joanne’s work and courses can be found on her website or socials
